Check
into the Foundation Station and set off on an enjoyable and
interactive learning experience. This 2 1/2 hour class will
meet twice a week for 28 weeks and cover the foundational skills of
reading, writing and math through active learning with peers.
Children will enjoy exposure to music, art, science and social
studies through creative hands on activities and games. Select
themes will direct this learning bringing continuity to the
classroom experience and opportunities to engage children with
all learning styles.
Foundation Station will follow a Charlotte Mason/classical
philosophy of education. For Language Arts we will incorporate
First Language Lessons 1-2 by Jessie Wise and Primary Language
Lessons by Emma Serl. A variety of reading and writing
activities including Readers Theatre Skits and Storytelling
will serve to develop communication skills both oral and
written. Math skills will be developed using innovative games
and activities combined with lessons from the Horizons Math
Curriculum.
At home assignments will include:
a reading log, math worksheets/ student
workbook, and language arts activities.
Students
will complete at home assignments to make this class a
comprehensive course.
Class meets on Monday and
Wednesday for 2 1/2 hours per day. 2 x 14 week Semesters. This
is a one-year commitment.
Bio
Katie
Harrell has a dual certification in elementary education and
special education. She has taught Pre-K
-
6th grade
special education in various settings for 8
1/2
years. She has substituted K-3 for the past 3 years. Katie
also enjoys teaching a weekly Bible study for students from
1st through 12th grades.
Her love
for using creative methods to teach the formative years, has
drawn her to the Center and lured her back into the classroom
